This is a time for our community to take extra measures to help protect people who are most vulnerable from COVID-19. Older adults and people of all ages with underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, and a weakened immune system have a greater risk for serious complications from the virus. Serious illness may require hospitalization and could also lead to death.

Here’s what you can do to help those who are most vulnerable:
1. Check in daily by phone or online.
2. Offer to run errands or get groceries. Deliver items on the porch or just outside the door.
3. Avoid all in-person visits with family and friends. Hold virtual visits and celebrations instead.
4. When in public, wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth, and maintain social distancing of 6 feet.
5. If you live with someone who is vulnerable, make sure you remove your shoes and wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds when you get home.
6. Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects every day, such as door knobs, light switches, tables, phones, and keyboards. After cleaning, disinfect surfaces and objects with products suitable for COVID-19: https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2

I am saddened to write this, but for any of you who do not have social media, have not called the library and listened to the machine or walked over to the library and seen the post on the door, this is for you.  Due to Governor Cuomo’s extension of NYS on PAUSE, we will now be closed through Saturday May 16, 2020.  All programs will be cancelled through May 31, 2020 and possibly longer as right now it is not safe for social gathering events to happen.  When we know a date that we can reopen or other services we can provide from afar, I will let you know.

We are doing virtual programs so come check them out at:  https://morrisvillepubliclibrary.org/events/links-for-virtual-programs/.  Our newest one this week is our Chat around the Circulation Desk program! Be sure to wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth when in public. COVID-19 can be spread to people who are nearby when a person talks, coughs, or sneezes, even if that person is NOT showing symptoms. A cloth face covering will help keep people who have the virus from spreading it, even if they do not know they are infected. The face covering also offers another layer of protection to those who are not ill, but may come into contact with someone who is.  The face covering should not be a replacement for social distancing.

1. The cloth face coverings may be made from items you have at home, such as a bandana, scarf, or an old t-shirt. The cloth face coverings recommended are NOT surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders.
2. Cloth face coverings should NOT be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the face covering without help.
3. Cloth face coverings should be routinely washed - in a washing machine, if possible. When removing your face covering, be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth, and wash your hands immediately after removing.

For more information on COVID-19 and how to make and wash the recommended cloth face coverings, visit https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2479/Coronavirus-COVID-19.

April 17th, 2020 Jennifer Forward Part 2

April 17th, 2020

I think that it is probably time to update the world on all things “Jen” for the past couple of weeks. For the most part, it has all been rather anticlimactic. I’ve settled into a routine of doing schoolwork while balancing library time and time for myself into my schedule as well. For the most part, I am beginning to feel comfortable with the new world I am living in. Let’s be honest, it is not ideal, I would rather be at school with my friends or spending my weekends at the library with our patrons, but this isn’t a horrible situation, and I am doing alright. I miss my friends and our patrons, but I am thankful for the internet and that I can connect with them whenever I’m feeling down.

Since settling into a routine, in a way, time seems to be flying by. It’s hard to believe that a little over a month ago, we had closed the library and I felt as though my life was destroyed. An honest part of me thought that I wouldn’t last even a week of this. We are all a little more tenacious than we think we are. A month ago, I would have thought it was crazy for anyone to believe that they could make almost the entire population stay home and not go socialize or participate in other currently banned activities. While we are far from perfect in this, I am proud of all of us for making this effort and denying a little of ourselves to protect those around us. There is nothing more selfless at this moment than staying home and abiding by our restrictions. It has such a bigger impact than I think any of us can fully fathom. In a way, we are showing those around us how much we care, not only about our own well-being, but theirs too.

I will say that some days are better than others. There are some days where I am bubbling over with barely containable optimism and then there are others where I have a hard time convincing myself that getting out of bed in the morning is a worthy cause. On those days the worst-case scenarios always seem more likely, and a simple burden weighs a thousand pounds more. Fortunately, those rough days are becoming less frequent.

I think we all try to pretend that we are handling this pandemic in stride and that we have it all figured out. I am the worst of these offenders. Some days my optimism is real and other days it’s just a facade to cover up the hurt I am truly experiencing. The facade is an attempt to put a smile on someone else’s face so that I can assure myself that they aren’t experiencing the hurt that I am. One of the things this pandemic has shown me is that it is okay to not always have it all together. You are not anything less of a person if you face a struggle every now and again. I also think it’s important to not only allow yourself to be okay with struggling but to admit that you’re struggling to others. People have a hard time trying to relate to someone they see as perfect and never struggles. They almost feel like they have to live up to an impossible ideal that is completely false anyways. They want someone that they can see themselves in and receive a reminder that they are not alone in their struggles. Admitting your struggles takes you from being an unfeeling statue to actually being a human.

There’s been a lot of talk about life not being the same when all of this is over. As much as I would like to vehemently deny this statement, each passing day shows me that this is all the more likely. It is hard to admit and really face the fact that things will never be normal again. I am fairly certain that the library I closed on Monday, March 16th is not the same library that I will open whenever that day maybe. I miss casual conversations around the circulation desk with our patrons and it hurts me to know that those may not be a reality for a long time. It’s a tough but necessary pill to swallow. Part of me wonders if I have worked my last regular shift before I move on to bigger and better things. It is weird to think that a face-covering will be almost as normal as putting your shoes on or grabbing your keys. It is also weird to think of how different my college experience will be if we are even permitted to return. It hurts to think of how long it may be before we are able to casually visit friends or go see a movie. We cannot change these circumstances, and I think that is what makes them hurt worse. Many times if there is something in our lives that we do not enjoy or is a stumbling block there is something that we can do to remove it. We are very independent people. This is one situation where we are helpless to an enemy that we cannot see and do not understand. All we can do is abide by the restrictions placed in front of us and embrace them to the best of our abilities. Waiting games are tough, but isn’t the prize always worth it in the end?

I really find it interesting how this pandemic has really brought out the true colors in all of us. I know it sounds like I am trying to grasp at straws and talk bad about people but I see a lot of good in people’s true colors. It is really neat how some people have really emerged from the shadows as some of the brightest lights in these dark times. We are seeing new leaders appear that are helping to guide as all through this tough time. We are seeing people provide encouragement who normally wouldn’t speak to us. It is heartwarming. Love works in mysterious ways.

Things may never be “normal” again, but fortunately, we are at a pivotal moment where we can work to make the new “normal” much more positive than the one we left behind. Yes, there will be some inevitable negative portions of this “normal”, but we can use this time to address some of the things that set us back in the past and develop a better “normal” that outweighs the inevitable negative portions that will be present. We can make it “normal” to show those we love that we love them. We can make it normal to be kind to others, we don’t need a global pandemic for that anymore. We can do good to others simply because we are naturally good people who don’t need to be praised for our efforts. Let’s collectively leave our unfeeling statues behind and work to become authentic human beings as we embark on this new world we are all entering in.

This is where our journey ends for today. If there is one thing that is consistent at this point in time, it is school assignments. Schoolwork is calling and I must go...

Yesterday, an Executive Order by Governor Cuomo was announced that requires everyone who is over the age of 2 to cover their nose and mouth with a cloth face covering when in a public place and unable to maintain social distance. The Executive Order is set to take effect at 8 pm on Friday, April 17, 2020.

New scientific evidence has shown an increase in community transmission of COVID-19. As a result, public health recommendations have been updated to reduce the spread of the virus in a public setting. A cloth face covering will help keep people who have the virus from spreading it, even if they do not know they are infected. This can be done by wearing a scarf, bandana, or a mask made from a t-shirt over your nose and mouth. The face covering should not be a replacement for social distancing.

Madison County does not have the ability to provide every resident with a cloth face covering. We are asking that our residents be resourceful and make their own, or make cloth masks that can be donated or sold to others in our community.

Directions on how to make and wash the recommended cloth face coverings are available at https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2562/Face-Coverings-for-Essential-Workers-Pub.

After more than 200 families line up for free milk, yogurt and cheese, SUNY Morrisville plans second dairy drive-thru
By: Natalie Rubio-Licht

A truckload of yogurt, 200 gallons of milk and one ton of string cheese were distributed to more than 200 families during last week’s drive-thru dairy distribution event at SUNY Morrisville.

A second donation event is planned for Friday, April 17, and will include milk, cottage cheese and sour cream, with help from the Morrisville Auxiliary Corporation and the Morrisville-Eaton Central School District.

The drive starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. or when there is no more dairy products available.

The distribution event aims to help families and community members that may be facing food insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic and to support the Central New York dairy industry.

Dozens of cars stretched a mile down the road from the facility for last Friday’s event, according to college officials.

To better accommodate traffic, the pickup location for Friday’s drive will be on Hart Road, which will be closed starting at 2 p.m. for the event. The location is up the road from SUNY Morrisville Dairy Complex.

To take part in the drive, participants will first go to 3555 Eaton Rd./St. and will be directed by signs and traffic officers on where to go.

Participants will be given a pre-packaged bag of dairy products and milk. Proper social distancing and safety must be practiced during the event. Recipients must remain in their vehicles at all times.

Though the drive is free to the public, donations are accepted. For more information or to donate, email Ashley Adams Marshall, SUNY Morrisville assistant professor of dairy science and leader of the event at adamsae@morrisville.edu.

OVERWHELMING RESPONSE SPURS EXPANSION OF SUNY MORRISVILLE DAIRY DRIVE-THRU, WHICH WILL BE HELD AGAIN FRIDAY, APRIL 17 FOR THOSE IN NEED IN THE MORRISVILLE COMMUNITY

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — An overwhelming response has expanded the second SUNY Morrisville and community dairy drive-thru, which will be held Friday, April 17, past the college’s Dairy Complex on Eaton Street (where it was held last week). The free dairy drive is 4-6 p.m. or until products are gone.

Once on Eaton Street, patrons will be directed where to go to pick up dairy products.

The new location, Hart Road, is just up the road from the SUNY Morrisville Dairy Complex and will better accommodate traffic and pickup. Hart Road will be closed from 2 p.m. on for the event.

Quick facts
• Morrisville dairy drive-thru time: 4-6 p.m.
• Location: 3555 Eaton Road/Street, Eaton, New York. Follow signs and officers directing traffic.
• Patrons will receive one pre-packaged bag of dairy items and milk.
• Patrons must remain in their vehicles at all times.
• The dairy drive is open to all community members who are in need.
• Items are free. Monetary donations are accepted.

Items for distribution this week include pasteurized milk, cottage cheese and sour cream. Last week, a truckload of yogurt, 200 gallons of milk and one ton of string cheese were among the items that were distributed to more than 230 patrons. More than 450 cars lined up a mile to Route 20 for last week’s drive.

“We hope to be able to serve more people this week,” said Ashley Marshall, a SUNY Morrisville faculty member leading the event.

Joining forces in the dairy drive-thru are SUNY Morrisville, the Morrisville Auxiliary Corporation (MAC) and the Morrisville-Eaton Central School District.

In response to the new information that face masks will help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Governor Cuomo has issued an Executive Order that applies to all essential businesses as an effort to protect the health of essential workers and the public. All employees in the workplace must be provided with and wear face coverings when in direct contact with customers or members of the public. It is the responsibility of the employer to provide the face coverings for their employees effective Wednesday, April 15 at 8 pm. This will be enforced by local governments or local law enforcement as part of Public Health Law.

It should be noted that if any essential employee has their own face covering that meets the CDC guidelines, then the employer may allow the employee to wear it. However, for any employees who do not have a face covering, the business must provide it for them to wear.

For more information on COVID-19 and how to make and wash the recommended cloth face coverings, visit: https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2479/Coronavirus-COVID-19.

We here at Madison County understand that face masks are hard to come by.  That is why we are asking the members of our community who are willing to make masks for essential employees to get in touch with Madison County Emergency Management at em@madisoncounty.ny.gov so we can compile a list and give it to our businesses.  Thank you for your help keeping members of our community safe.
